Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
This is italki's defining choice and it matters more in Japanese than in most languages.
Professional teachers hold teaching qualifications and work to structured plans. For Japanese that structure is worth paying for early — three writing systems and a grammar that inverts English word order are not things to work out unaided.
Community tutors are native speakers offering conversation practice at lower rates, and they are where the real value sits once you have a foundation. Speaking time is the bottleneck for almost every intermediate learner.
Why a Native Tutor Matters Here
Japanese has a politeness system where using the wrong register is a social error rather than a grammatical one. Keigo, polite form and plain form are poorly taught by apps and textbooks, and using plain form with a manager lands badly. A native tutor corrects register in the moment, which nothing else does.
The JLPT is also worth understanding before you set it as a goal — it tests reading and listening only, with no speaking component, so a candidate can pass N2 and still struggle to hold a conversation.
