Cyrillic takes a fortnight and feels like an achievement. Then come six cases, each changing nouns, adjectives and pronouns, and a verb system built on aspect rather than tense — where whether an action was completed changes the verb entirely.

Neither concept has a clean English equivalent, which is why self-study attrition in Russian is high. A tutor can work out which case you consistently misuse and drill that specific thing, which a textbook chapter cannot.

Stress Is Unmarked and Unpredictable

Written Russian does not mark which syllable is stressed, and stress changes vowel pronunciation substantially. There is no rule to learn — you acquire it word by word, from someone correcting you. This is the practical case for a tutor over any self-study route.
