How Parent-Taught Works

Texas is one of the few states permitting a parent or guardian to act as the drivers education instructor. The course material is supplied and the state-approved structure followed, but the parent delivers the instruction, supervises the in-car hours and signs off completion.

The saving is real, and so is the commitment — the classroom hours and the behind-the-wheel training both fall to the parent to deliver and log. Confirm the current hour requirements with the TDLR before starting, since they change.

Who Can Be the Instructor

Texas sets conditions on who may act as the parent-taught instructor, covering your relationship to the student and your own driving record. A conviction for certain offences disqualifies you. Confirm your eligibility with the TDLR before buying, since the course is of no use if you cannot legally teach it.

Parent-Taught or the School Course?

Parent-taught costs less and fits around your own schedule. The concurrent course removes the burden entirely and puts a professional instructor in the car. Families who are confident drivers with time available tend to choose parent-taught; those without either usually do not.
