CITB TWCTC Introduction

The two-day TWCTC and one-day Refresher TWCTC-R course are designed to help those who have responsibility for managing all forms of temporary works on site. The course will provide candidates with a thorough knowledge of the role of a Temporary Works Coordinator.

The TWCTC Refresher course is an opportunity for learners who have attended the substantive TWCTC to revise and update their knowledge and understanding. The TWC course is designed to suit employees of civil engineering and building contractors as well as specialist contractors such as utilities. It is aimed at graduates, site managers, site agents and site engineers wishing to become Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC). It is designed to give confidence to senior management that they are providing the training required for employees as part of their competency requirements in the role of TWC.

Delivered online by a real instructor using video conferencing software.

Course Duration

2 days

The course is based on BS5975:2019 and includes group tutorials.

A detailed course workbook will be provided for each learner. The workbook contains typical temporary works documents and templates, key notes on BS 5975:2019, case studies, glossary of terms, a section on legislation and a summary of where other relevant guidance can be sourced. It does not involve structural calculations. This is not a Temporary Works awareness course.

Scope

The TWCTC course will cover the following topics:

  • The need for and duties of a TWC
  • The other key roles involved in temporary works
  • The use of BS 5975:2019 in relation to the role
  • Typical documents used in temporary works
  • Other legislation and guidance that interact with temporary works
  • The importance of the 4 Cs: communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competence
  • The need for risk management

Entry Requirements

Learners are expected to have a working knowledge of the following legislation:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005

A key issue for temporary works is health and safety, so learners need to be prepared to discuss how health and safety legislation is relevant to temporary works, as well as which Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) and guidance notes may assist or contribute to safe practices in temporary works.

Learners need to be prepared to discuss and explore all the core health and safety factors that are integrated into temporary works processes at all stages of a project, from initiation to closure. They will need to have a working knowledge of all associated legislation, specifically the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 in terms of its intentions and compliance.

Learners must also have a thorough understanding of health and safety principles and understand the importance of risk management, design considerations, inspection and testing and recording and monitoring requirements.

Learners who have achieved a certificate approved against the Health and Safety in Construction Site Supervision standard (such as SSSTS or SSSTS-R) or the Health and Safety in Construction Site Management standard (such as SMSTS or SMSTS-R) will have gained the knowledge to meet these expectations. This is not a mandatory pre-requisite, but learners with these achievements will benefit from having this knowledge before attending the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • Module 1 - Types of temporary works - different types of temporary works and temporary work solutions.
  • Module 2 - History of temporary works and its legislative framework -causes and consequences of failure, the avoidance of failure.
  • Module 3 - Who is involved with temporary works - stakeholders and duty holders’ responsibilities and accountabilities.
  • Module 4 - Planning TW - management and control of design, key processes, procurement, risk classification.
  • Module 5 - Managing the construction, erection and dismantling of Temporary works - the key activities required during the active life of the temporary works.

Trainer Review

The trainer review is the assessment by the trainer of how well a learner has performed in the class. It is a pass or fail assessment. This is an interactive course where learners are expected to actively engage and participate in discussions and group exercises. Trainers will expect all learners to work collaboratively, make decisions, listen to others’ point of view, work towards a common goal during activities and actively contribute to discussion.

To assist in achieving this all learners are expected to participate within a private, quiet environment with no disruptions. Should a learner fail the trainer review they would not be allowed to proceed to the examination.

Examination

Full attendance of the two day course is required. The 45-minute examination paper consists of 22 questions, 18 multiple choice and 4 free text questions. The pass mark is 78% or 21 out of 27. It is an open book examination, allowing learners to use their course delegate workbook and any notes that they have taken. The examination is completed under examination conditions.

Those learners who achieve 17 or more marks out of 27 will be offered the opportunity to resit the examination using a different test paper. Where a learner scores less that 17 out of 27 the full 2 days must be attended before they can resit a further examination.
