Work Experience

Prior to joining THSP I served 24 years in the Royal Engineers. This is where I was taught how to instruct. Between 2000 and 2003 I was employed as a combat engineer instructor and was responsible for teaching both theory and practical lessons on 10-week training courses to recruits and trained soldiers I also delivered training to Assault Pioneers on a shorter 5-week course. During this posting I also achieved the NVQ Assessor and Internal verifier role.

Between 2011 and 2013 I was employed as a training mentor and was responsible for validating the readiness of troops and field army units who were to deploy on operations to Afghanistan and Iraq. This role involved coaching and mentoring of all levels of the organisation as well as identifying skills gaps and providing the training required to close these gaps. The training delivered covered all aspects of the Royal Engineer job specification. Examples of health and safety related topics included:

General Health and safety awareness, Demolition safety, Safety when working on and/or over water. Safety when using chemicals (eg for water purification, construction and fuels). Safety around plant equipment, Manual handling, Safety when using power tools, Working at height, Mine warfare safety, Abrasive wheels, Safety during construction work, Construction site supervision/management, Working in extreme climates

When I retired from the Army in 2015 I joined THSP where I have been employed as a health and safety consultant and safety trainer. The courses currently delivered cover various health and safety topics, specialising in construction-related H&S courses. Subjects trained include:

Every day of my job is training and evaluation as it is key that I educate clients and their staff, so they learn and understand why I have made recommendations during our meetings and visits. I am also responsible for training, mentoring and assessing new consultants to ensure they can operate to the standard required by the organisation.
