This Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice course is for those looking for a higher level qualification without formal exams. It is competence based, which you will demonstrate through completing tasks and providing work based evidence.
NVQ Course
As an NVQ course, there is no formal course structure, schedule or study text. All of your work will be uploaded to RRC’s online learning platform where it will be reviewed by an assessor.
Application Process
While there are no formal entry requirements for NVQs, you will need the following in order to be successful:
- You will need a good standard of English language
- You will need to be working in a health and safety role with sufficient authority and autonomy to influence organisational policies and procedures
Pre-enrolment Assessment
Before you enrol on the course, we will ask you to complete initial assessment and SkillScan forms to ensure you are in a position to successfully complete the ProQual NVQ. If it is determined that you are not in a position to be successful, we will advise you of this and recommend an alternative course if appropriate.
You will not be charged if you do not meet the requirements to start the course.
RRC's NVQ Process
RRC has taken a different approach to assessment that makes the process clearer and more straightforward for you and your assessor. When you start the course, you will be provided with the marking criteria for assessments, as well as expanded learner notes for each unit which removes ambiguity around what you need to do to successfully complete the unit.
All assessments and evidence are submitted to RRC’s online learning platform. This will be a combination of:
- Work-based assessment - set tasks to be completed and supported by work-based evidence
- Reflective tasks - Reflections to show how you have developed from experiences at work and how your competence has improved Knowledge competence check - a series of questions to validate your knowledge
There will also be 2 professional discussions with your assessor to review your progress and further evaluate your competence. These will take place after you have completed the 5th and 10th units.
For each module, once you all your assessments had evidence has been submitted, your assessor will mark your uploaded documents and evidence against the same marking criteria you have been provided. If there are areas where you haven’t met the criteria, your assessor will highlight which parts of the criteria have not been met so that you can easily update and resubmit.
Course Content & Learning Objectives
To achieve the ProQual Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Practice you need to complete the 10 mandatory units, which must be completed in order. For each unit, Learners will be expect to demonstrate how they will maintain and record their professional development as it relates to the unit.
Unit 1 - Promote a positive health and safety culture

Unit 2 - Develop and implement health and safety policy

- Be able to define the statutory and workplace health and safety requirements for the organistion
- Be able to devleop the health and safety policy
- Be able to implement the health and safety policy
- Know the steps required to develop and implement the health and safety policy
Unit 3 - Develop and implement effective communication systems for health and safety information
Level 5 | 40 hours
Upon completing this unit you should:
- Be able to evaluate health and safety information
- Be able to produce communication systems for health and safety information into the organisation
- Be able to control the effectiveness of the communication systems for health and safety information going out of the organisation
- Know how to develop and implement effective communication systems for health and safety information
Unit 4 - Develop and maintain individual competence in health and safety matters
Level 5 | 49 hours
Upon completing this unit you should:
- Be able to assess the health and safety competence needs of the organisation
- Be able to implement health and safety training to meet identified needs
- Know how to develop and maintain individual and organisational competence in health and safety matters
Unit 5 - Identify, assess and control health and safety risks
Level 6 | 73 hours
Upon completing this unit you should:
- Be able to conduct an inspection of the workplace
- Be able to assess risks to health and safety
- Be able to implement risk control measures and safe systems of work in the organisation
- Know how to identify, assess and control health and safety risks
Unit 6 - Develop and implement proactive monitoring systems for
health and safety

- Be able to devise inspection and monitoring systems for health and safety proactive performance
- Be able to keep stakeholders informed of health and safety proactive performance monitoring outcomes

- Be able to develop a health and safety loss event reporting and recording system
