Hindi and Urdu Are Closer Than You Think
Spoken casually, Hindi and Urdu are largely mutually intelligible — the same underlying language drawing everyday vocabulary from the same source. They diverge in two places: script, with Hindi in Devanagari and Urdu in a Perso-Arabic script, and formal vocabulary, where Hindi reaches for Sanskrit and Urdu for Persian and Arabic.
Worth knowing before you choose, particularly if your family connection is to Pakistan rather than India. italki lists both separately, so you can pick deliberately.
Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
Community tutors suit heritage learners especially well. If you already understand a good deal and simply cannot produce it, what you need is someone to talk to — not instruction from the alphabet upward.
Professional teachers are the better route if you are starting from nothing, or want to read and write Devanagari properly rather than only speak.
Heritage Learners
A very common profile: you understand a good deal, speak haltingly, and cannot read Devanagari at all. Say so at the trial lesson — a good tutor will build from your existing comprehension rather than starting cold.
What Is Actually Difficult
Gendered nouns affecting verb agreement, postpositions instead of prepositions, and the retroflex consonants that have no English equivalent. Devanagari itself is phonetic and learnable in a few weeks.
