Tones Are the Reason to Use a Tutor

Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral one, and they carry meaning — the same syllable at a different pitch is a different word. Learners routinely practise for months with tones that are subtly wrong, because a learner cannot hear their own error.

This is the single strongest case for one-to-one tuition in any language. Everything else in Mandarin can be self-studied to a point; tones genuinely cannot.

Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?

Professional teachers hold qualifications and work to structured plans — the right choice for building tones and characters correctly from the start, and for HSK preparation where format familiarity matters.

Community tutors are native speakers offering conversation at lower rates, and become the better value once your tones are sound and you need volume practice.

Simplified or Traditional?

Mainland China and Singapore use simplified characters; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use traditional. Decide which you need before booking. Note also that spoken Mandarin is broadly shared, while Cantonese is a separate language rather than a dialect — if you want Cantonese, search for it specifically.
