Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
Professional teachers hold teaching qualifications and work to structured plans. French rewards early correction more than most languages — pronunciation, liaison and the gap between written and spoken form all harden into habit if learned wrong, and are difficult to unpick later.
Community tutors are native speakers offering conversation at lower rates. Once your pronunciation is sound, they are where the value sits: spoken French at natural speed sounds very little like the textbook, and regular exposure is the only reliable fix for that.
Which French?
Metropolitan, Québécois, Belgian and West African French differ in accent and idiom. Metropolitan is the right default for most learners, but if you are moving to Montréal or working in Francophone Africa it is worth matching your tutor accordingly. Tutors state their origin on their profiles.
Exam Preparation
DELF and DALF are the standard CEFR-aligned qualifications, recognised by French universities and employers. If you are working toward one, filter for a tutor who names it specifically — the examinations have a defined structure and preparing for that format is a separate skill from general fluency. This is where a professional teacher usually earns the higher rate.
