Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
Italian is forgiving early and demanding later, which shapes the choice.
Community tutors work well from the start here. Pronunciation is largely regular, so beginners make quick visible progress and mainly need someone to talk to — conversation at natural speed, which in Italian moves fast and elides heavily.
Professional teachers earn their higher rate at the intermediate wall: subjunctive mood, pronoun combinations and the passato remoto, where self-study reliably stalls.
Exam Preparation and Citizenship
CILS and CELI are the main CEFR-aligned certifications, with PLIDA as a third option. If you are applying for Italian citizenship by descent or residence, a B1 certificate is commonly required — check the current rule for your route, as requirements have changed in recent years, and choose a tutor who prepares candidates for the specific examination.
Regional Variation
Standard Italian is what examinations test, but regional accents and dialects vary substantially. If you are moving somewhere specific, a tutor from that region is worth seeking once you have a foundation.
